Bring a historic message of unity to your patch collection with the Join or Die Snake morale patch. This embroidered patch measures 3 × 2 inches and uses hook backing for compatible loop panels.
The history behind Join or Die
Benjamin Franklin's “Join, or Die” cartoon appeared in The Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754, as conflict with France threatened Britain's North American colonies. Its segmented snake called for the colonies to cooperate in their common defense. The original message was a plea for unity within the British colonial world, not yet a demand for American independence.
The snake's eight sections represented colonies or regions, with New England grouped into one segment. In the years leading to the American Revolution, the image was reused as a call for solidarity against British policies. It predates Christopher Gadsden's 1775 flag and is a distinct design, rather than the same coiled-snake “Don't Tread on Me” emblem.
What it means today
The design can express an interest in early American history or a belief in cooperation and shared purpose. Its message centers on the strength of joining together, though modern interpretations vary with the person and setting.
